So what is HTML and why do you need to learn it? The first part of that question is easy, HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is made up of a set of written commands that determine how your web page appears. Why learn it? You really don't need to, there are lots of "What you see is what you get" web page makers out there now. But it is a good idea to at least learn some of the basics for the same reason that it's better to "Hand" knit than just to use a knitting machine. Doing HTML by hand gives you lots more control and design flexibility. It's also not much harder to learn the basic HTML tags than it is to learn how to use a program that does it for you. Besides, creating web pages is really not very different from any other craft and it can be a lot of fun.
